The Effect of Describing Authors¡¯ Contribution on the Numbers of Honorary Authors

Abstract

|
Purpose : This study was performed to assess whether the statements of authors¡¯ contribution could cause to decrease numbers of honorary authors or not through identifying changes of number of authors in 1996, 2000 and 2005 and analyzing the difference of that between the journals requiring the statement of author¡¯s contribution and journals not requiring it.
Materials and Method: Six Medical journals requiring statement of author¡¯s contribution and similar 6 journals not requiring statement of author¡¯s contribution are selected for the analysis of change of numbers of authors.
Results : All journals show significant increase in number of authors from 1996 to 2005. But there is no significant difference in increasing pattern of number of authors between journal between the journals requiring the statement of author¡¯s contribution and journal not requiring it
Conclusion : It is difficult to assess whether the statements of authors¡¯ contribution could cause to decrease numbers of honorary authors or not through identifying changes of number of authors.
